序‧Preface

孔子參加並且輔助魯國進行了年終的祭禮。

Confucius participated and assisted in the Year-end Sacrifice Ceremony of Lu.

祭祀後，走到宮門外兩邊的觀景臺上，還非常感慨地歎息起來。

When the sacrifice was over, he went to the observation deck of the palace, and sighed with great emotion.

孔子大抵是因為魯國的祭禮而有所感觸。

The sigh of Confucius was probably for the ceremony.

在旁邊侍候的言偃，問：老師，君子為甚麼會歎息？

Yán yǎn waiting by the side: why do gentleman sigh?

孔子說：當大道得以施行，與及夏、商 、周三代賢君當政的時代，

我沒能趕上，卻是我衷心嚮往的啊！

Confucius: The time when governing with benevolence & morality,

and the reign of the three generations of virtuous rulers in Xia,

Shang and Zhou dynasties, I was not able to catch up,

but I am sincerely yearning for it!

當大道施行時，天下是人人所共有的。

When governing with benevolence and morality, the world is shared by all.
